Ascend, the 2013 release from Six Degrees artist David Starfire, featured a dizzying cast of musical characters, including Afrika Bambaataa, Cheb i Sabbah, Natacha Atlas, iCatching and Sheila Govindarajan.
Now, for the new Ascend remix EP, David has reached out to some of his favorite producers, including some up and coming production talent in the mix as well. Starfire has been friends with Italian producer (and Six Degrees label mate) Gaudi for some time, a relationship which led to Gaudi’s striking “dub” style remix for “Ya Habibi” featuring the unmistakable vocals of Natacha Atlas. David’s frequent touring mate Govinda remixes “Indian Summer”, adding a funky glitch hop vibe to the track. Australia’s Kalya Scintilla adds sexy “psy-dub” textures to his remix of “Electrify Me” and Paul Basic (known for his releases on Pretty Lights record label), produced a stunning remix for “Rahu”, a song that was originally co-produced by the late Cheb i Sabbah.
One of David’s favorite new producers, Australia’s Whitebear, contributes a remix for “Big Chillum” and another new producer to watch out for, Sol Rising, puts his own sonic stamp on “Shiva Lives.” “House of Bhangra’s” remix comes courtesy of GoldyLoxX who won a remix contest David ran late last year. The track features vocals by the “Godfather of Hip Hop,” Afrika Bambaataa.
